Adherence Facts

Did you know?

Between 40-50% of diabetic patients do not abide by their medication, too many patients stop taking medication when they feel better or start when they feel worse. Inappropriate drug discontinuation by the elderly may occur up to 40% of the time.

In general, the overall estimated non-adherence rate is 24.8% (includes diet and exercise recommendations, as well); therefore, if 1 in 4 patients is non-adherent, the number of estimated 'wasted' medical visits are:

8.4 million hypertension
7.6 million diabetes
4.5 million cancer
112.2 million for medication
49.3 million for diet
22.6 million for exercise
The NEW cost estimate is closer to $300 Billion annually (2002 dollars) !!!!
